What you getThree ways to put Claude to work

Chat, Cowork and Code are all included in your Syracuse account. They are built for different kinds of work — most people start with Chat and grow into the other two.

Chat

The everyday assistant. Ask questions, work through a problem, summarize a long document, draft and revise, or think something out loud. Use it in a browser, on the desktop app or on your phone.

Cowork

For work that takes more than one step. Hand Claude a task that spans several files or several stages, let it do the work, then review what comes back. Best suited to the desktop app.

Code

Claude working directly in a codebase — reading a project, writing and editing code, and running the commands to check its own work. Built for research computing, data work and software development.

Recommended setupInstall the desktop app

Chat works well in any browser. For Cowork and Code, we recommend the desktop app — it is how those two are designed to be used, and it lets Claude work with files on your computer.

On a University-managed computer

Most Syracuse computers are managed by ITS, and the desktop app is available to install yourself — no ticket and no administrator rights needed. Use whichever applies to your machine.

Windows

Open Company Portal from the Start menu, search for Claude and select Install.

macOS

Open Jamf Self Service from Applications, search for Claude and select Install.

On a personal computer

Download the app directly from Anthropic at claude.ai/download (opens in a new tab), then sign in with your Syracuse email address so your work stays under University protections.

Signing in

Always sign in with your Syracuse email address. A personal Claude account is not covered by the University's agreement with Anthropic, which means University data must not go into it. See the Responsible AI Guidelines for what that covers, and AI Data and Privacy for how your data is handled.
