What happens to my Claude account when I graduate or leave?

Overview

Students keep Claude for 90 days from the end of their last term, not the day they leave. Staff, and faculty who resign, lose access when they leave. Retired faculty keep Claude if they had it as active faculty. There's no built-in export, so save your work before your access ends: copy it yourself, or email your chats to yourself.

Save your work

Copy your work yourself

Copy what you want to keep, such as chats, projects, artifacts and skills, out of Claude and save it somewhere you can still reach after you leave.

Email your chats to yourself

  1. Request Cowork at getclaude.syr.edu/Products (opens in a new tab) if it isn't on yet. The request includes a short training, so do it early. Then open a new Cowork session in the Claude desktop app.

  2. Install and connect the Claude in Chrome extension (Anthropic's guide (opens in a new tab) shows how), then sign in to claude.ai (opens in a new tab) in that Chrome browser.

  3. Turn on the Microsoft 365 connector in Cowork's connector settings, so Claude can send email from your mailbox. See connecting Claude to Microsoft 365 if you haven't set it up.

  4. Copy the prompt below and paste it into the session, with WHICH CHATS and MY EMAIL ADDRESS changed to your own details. Start with one chat to check the format.

  5. Check each email Claude shows you, and confirm only when it looks right. Run the prompt again for more chats.

The prompt to copy
Please export my Claude chats to email using the browser.

Steps:
1. Open claude.ai/recents in my connected Chrome browser and confirm I am logged in.
2. Export these chats: WHICH CHATS (for example: "just my most recent chat", "my last 5 chats", or "the chat titled ___").
3. For each chat, open it and capture the FULL conversation text: both my messages and Claude's responses, in order.
4. Send me one email per chat to MY EMAIL ADDRESS with:
   - Subject line: the chat title
   - Body: the full conversation, clearly labeled "You said:" and "Claude responded:", with the chat link at the top.
5. Show me the first email before sending so I can confirm the format, then continue.

If I ask for several chats, do them one at a time and keep the emails readable.

Troubleshooting

  • You're not signed in to claude.ai. Sign in to claude.ai (opens in a new tab) in the Chrome browser you connected to Claude, then run the prompt again.
  • Claude can't send email. Check that the Microsoft 365 connector is on in Cowork's connector settings, and that Outlook send mail isn't set to Blocked in the connector's Tool permissions.
  • The email didn't arrive. Check your Junk folder and make sure the email address in the prompt is right.
  • You're retired faculty and don't have access to Claude. Email aihelp@syr.edu with your SU NetID.

Additional information

  • Emeritus faculty count as retired faculty.
  • Students: when your 90 days end, your Claude license is automatically disabled, so you can't sign in. Your chats stay stored for up to two years, but you can't reach them, and ITS can't export them.
  • If your time has run out and you still need your chats, email aihelp@syr.edu to ask if it's still possible to get access.
  • If you bought API credits (prepaid developer access), you lose any you haven't used when your Syracuse access ends. Buy only what you expect to use before then.
  • Claude sends one email per chat. For a big batch, ask for one combined email instead.
